Well pumps are typically rated by their horsepower (HP). The size of the motor is calculated by how much work it has to do and how much demand you will have. If your well is 150 feet deep, but the pumping level is at 50 feet, you don’t need as much HP as if the well were at 150 feet and the pumping level were at 100 feet. In a similar vein, with a two story house – in which you would have to lift the water higher – you would require a larger HP pump to supply the requisite water needed.
